Kerley's South Australian National Football League (SANFL) playing career spanned 1952-1969. He played a total of 260 games for West Adelaide, South Adelaide and  Glenelg. He was a successful coach with legendary discipline, but also a shrewd tactician.  He coached SANFL premiership sides at West (1961 and 1983), South (1964) and Glenelg (1973), during a 28-season coaching career. He represented South Australia 32 times, winning All-Australian selection in 1961, and went on to coach the State side for 10 seasons.  He came to represent the face of South Australian football, especially to Victorians, due to his passion for interstate State of Origin games.

Promising Glenelg Recruits

Three or four recruits of more than the usual ability were induced in the number which Glenelg tested in a trial game at Glenelg Oval on Saturday.

Hannaford. a beautifully built player, showed impressive form. He comes from Mantung, and made his debut in League football last year, when he played a couple of matches for Glenelg.

In Wheare. a tall but remarkably agile player from Parilla, Glenelg seems to have discovered a man to fill a ruck vacancy. His speed and smart turning were features unusual in a ruckman.

Heartfield, from St. Leonards team in the Glenelg District Association, showed dashing form at centre wing, but gave the impression that he would rise to even greater brilliance as a rover.

Although his kicking was not consistently good, probably owing to the different bounce of the bail on the turf, Bell. a goalkeeper from Gumeracha, made a favourable impression at full back.

Smith, from Kooringa. was a strong and dashing rover, and his work carried a polish which showed him to be little below League standard.

Among the other players noticed for good work were R. Edwards. Goodwin, Seeley, Lawson and Brock.
