Career

Sam Lonergan was drafted by Essendon from the Launceston Football Club, via the Tassie Mariners U18s and the Tasmanian Devils, with selection 50 in the 2005 Draft.

Moving to Glenelg in 2014, he took on a role as a playing senior assistant coach (midfield). Lonergan excelled doing what he was known for in the AFL, getting down and dirty in the midfield, but this time with the addition of a tagger each week. Lonergan played 29 games over 2 seasons.

In October 2015, Sam was appointed Senior Playing Coach of the Launceston Football Club returning to his home state and his junior club. He was however caught up in the Essendon doping scandal, and served a suspension which saw him missing most of the 2015 and all the 2016 season. Lonergan resumed as playing coach at Launceston in 2017-18) taking them from second-last to a preliminary final in his first season at the helm and was subsequently named as the TSL’s Coach of the Year.

Returning to the SANFL for 2019, Lonergan coached Woodville-West Torrens. After only one season he left to take up an Assistant Coach role with Richmond in the AFL.
