Tim Sumner played 2 SANFL games with WWT Eagles before being  taken with pick No.55 in the 2012 AFL Draft by the Gold Coast.

Sumner played 17 games and kicked six goals across 2 seasons, but struggled with personal issues in his third season and retired from the AFL.

Seeking to reignite his passion for football, Sumner recommenced his career at Glenelg in 2016, playing 10 League games and kicking 15 goals.  He was however unable to maintain progress and only managed a single League game in 2017, before heading to country football in 2018.  A further attempt in 2019 resulted in a further 4 games for Glenelg, but he finally retired once and for all at the end of the season.
