Round 1

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
North Adelaide 1.0 5.4 6.4 7.4 46
Glenelg 1.4 1.4 2.9 2.10 22
Soriah Moon on debut

The Tigers certainly started out as the better side, however inaccuracy proved to be their biggest enemy, as the side booted three points in just over two minutes to close the first quarter. And when you’re up against a team with the scoring capacity as North Adelaide, you just can’t afford to miss that many.

The Roosters would go on to boot five unanswered goals until Glenelg got one back at the twelfth minute mark of the third quarter.

However, considering the number of debutants that the Tigers had for their round one clash, it wasn’t a bad performance. In fact, they actually finished with one more scoring shot, despite losing by four goals.

And looking at the stats, Glenelg won the clearances (22 to 15) and the tackles (41 to 34), and only narrowly lost the inside 50s by two. Glenelg were even more efficient with the footy, finishing with 73% disposal efficiency compared to North Adelaide’s 68%.

However, the one overwhelming stat was Glenelg’s lack of execution in front of goal; finishing with a 17% scoring efficiency, which is much lower than North’s 64% efficiency.

From a Glenelg perspective, some of the positives would be the performance of some of their young Tigers, with Madisyn Freeman collecting 14 disposals and four clearances while first-gamer Tessa Kohn finished with 12 disposals and four clearances.

Likewise, from the Roosters perspective, their positives besides a round one win, would be the performance of Cristie Castle, who finished the round one clash with 15 disposals, six marks and five clearances.

Round 2

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
West Adelaide 2.3 3.6 5.10 6.12 48
Central District 0.0 1.2 1.2 1.2 8

Leading into our Round 2 clash with West Adelaide, the team had done everything we could ask of them to prepare for a physical contest. In fact, our main training session was one of the best we’d had in recent times.

Our pregame preparation was equally as good. The vibe throughout the group could not be faulted.

Something went amiss somewhere between the final words in the change room and the first centre bounce. Unfortunately, this was the trend across all four quarters.

What we displayed on Friday night was completely unrecognisable and looked nothing like anything we had shown to date. West Adelaide deserves a lot of credit – their pressure and manic game plan was first class, but we didn’t fire a shot and allow them to do as they wished for the entire game.

It was very difficult to find positives, but the never surrender attitude of Lucy Armitage, who amassed 12 tackles, including a 30m rundown effort that should have been team lifting for anyone with a pulse, must be highlighted. Sixteen year old Zoe Smith, playing her second game of SANFLW football in just her second season, worked hard throughout the game. Tessa Kohn, who is also playing her first season at SANFLW level after coming through our junior program, played a strong and physical game.

Whilst the players are hurting, our leaders have already ensured the team’s focus is on what we can control moving forward. We are really looking forward to the challenge of taking on the vastly improved Central District at 11am this Saturday at X-Convenience Oval Elizabeth. This is a great opportunity for our group to walk the talk.

Round 3

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Central District 0.1 0.1 1.3 1.4 10
Glenelg 2.5 5.8 6.11 8.12 60
Ellie Kellock

A week really is a long time in football!

Five changes were made at selection from the previous week’s team, with Lauren Kenny and Brooke Tonon making their debut. At a tender young age of 16, Brooke is a talented junior from our South East country zone who started schooling in Adelaide in 2020 and settled into our program really well. Jess Searle and Melinda Speechley played their first games for the season, while Caitlin Gould returned to us after being drafted by the Adelaide Crows in 2019 and having played for them the previous two weeks.

Off the back of a disappointing loss last week, where we didn’t fire any shots whatsoever, the challenge was squarely on the coaches and playing group to improve significantly and quickly as we prepared to take on a vastly improved Central District team. Full credit to our leaders who led the way to ensure morale remained positive and training standards continued to be high throughout the week. The overall vibe during the week and before the game was nothing but positive, as the group appeared super keen to make amends.

From the first bounce to the final siren we displayed our brand for the first time this season. It was strong and completely recognisable to what we trained throughout the entire preseason.

Caitlin Gould and Soriah Moon were great contributors in the Ruck, with our midfield supporting their good work and competing fiercely to help us control the territory battle in the first half. Our backline was strong despite having momentum go against us at times. Most pleasing was the return of our pressure to keep the ball in our forward half, which was led by Jordana Bradley and Lauren Kenny.

At half time we led by 37 points. We had five goals on the board with five different goal scorers. This included one to our young debutant, Brooke Tonon, who was swamped by all her team mates. Brooke’s performance showed exactly why she is going to be one to watch out for in the years to come.

Early in the second half, Central District began to get some control in the midfield, which had our midfield and backline under pressure. Pleasingly, we had clearly learnt some lessons from the last two weeks and we displayed a much better effort to absorb the pressure until we were able to get momentum back.

Whilst it was a genuine all round team performance as the stats suggests, Ellie Kellock was strong in the contest all game and set the tone early with her typically courageous attack on the ball. Caitlin Gould showed us why she was drafted by the Crows, with strong game in the Ruck and a good presence forward. Melinda Speechley and Jess Searle provided a good link to our forward line. Madi Freeman returned to form, Lucy Armitage contributed well over 4 quarters, and Lauren Fisher and Soriah Moon showed further development in just their 3rd game.

In the end, we had 20 scoring shots to 5, which was pleasing, but inaccuracy in front of goal cost us some much needed percentage.

Round 4

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Eagles 1.1 2.2 4.2 7.3 45
Glenelg 2.0 3.2 3.2 3.2 20

We were on the wrong side of history this week losing to the Eagles for their first ever SANFLW win.

The first half was a very competitive contest. As is often the case, we controlled a lot of the key stats that we value within our program. Our defenders controlled their area, our midfield had an element of control around the stoppages and our forwards had enough supply. Scoring opportunities were limited however.

The first half saw a crafty goal to Molly Althouse, who returned to the team displaying her innate ability to win the ball in traffic and create opportunities from half chances. A text book crumbing goal to Lauren Kenny followed. Melinda Speechley then snapped a good goal early in the second quarter. We headed into the half time break in front by a goal, but due to the Eagles strong defence, we just didn’t create enough opportunities to cash in when we had momentum.

As is also often the case, we just couldn’t stick to our game plan for long enough. The third quarter saw Eagles start to get some midfield control, which put our defense under immense pressure for sustained periods of time. We still had enough opportunities, with 9 forward 50 entries, but just couldn’t put any of this on the scoreboard. Somehow we were only down by one goal at three quarter time.

The Eagles dominated the midfield in the last quarter. Adelaide Crows Ruck, Rhiannon Metcalfe, who was dropped to the Eagles for this game, was dominant. Our two Rucks, who had played 5 SANFL Women’s games combined, were learning on the job against a very, very good player.

Full credit must go to Tess Baxter and her team. The Eagles are the most improved team from last season. They could easily have won all their games to date.

Whilst we have shown our best is good enough to match it with the best teams in the competition, we have struggled to put it together consistently from quarter to quarter across a whole game. We own our performances, but we are also fully aware of where we are at. We had 19 debutants last season and have added a further 11 this season. We are working hard to build a strong and sustainable program.

As a result of the building we are doing, Tessa Kohn was awarded the SANFL Women’s Powerade Breakthrough Player for round 4. She has had a very consistent start to the season, despite only being in her second ever season of football. This award is thoroughly deserved by Tess.

Round 5

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Glenelg 2.2 4.3 5.3 5.3 33
South Adelaide 1.2 3.2 4.3 7.6 48
Ebony Marinoff

The long awaited resumption of the SANFLW saw us take on the back-to-back reigning premiers, South Adelaide, at ACH Group Stadium on Sunday.

In an exciting twist to the SANFLW resumption, AFLW players are permitted to play. This resulted in a number of highly credentialed AFLW players being named for both teams. Caitlin Gould, Eloise Jones and Ebony Marinoff returned to the Tigers, with Deni Varnhagen making her Glenelg debut.

The first three quarters was a high quality and very competitive contest, both sides going goal for goal. Every time it appeared we were starting to take control of the game, South Adelaide was able to find a way to respond. Caitlin Gould competed well in the Ruck, but with two evenly matched midfields, clean clearances were at a premium. Through the efforts of Tessa Kohn, Grace Duffy and Madi Freemen, we were able to break even and provide our forwards some good opportunities. The athleticism, marking prowess and pressure from Eloise Jones was a real standout.

In addition to the hard running Deni Varnhagen, we also had Sarah Wilton and Casey McElroy make their Glenelg debuts. McElroy is the first senior player recruited from our South East zone who has not come through our junior pathway.

Despite being up by a goal at three quarter time, unfortunately we were overrun by South Adelaide’s strong midfield in the last quarter.

While clearly not the result we expected, we did prove that our best is good enough to compete with the best teams. The challenge for us is to learn how to sustain it for four quarters.

Round 6

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Glenelg 0.0 1.0 3.1 4.1 25
North Adelaide 1.3 3.4 6.4 6.7 43

Another great challenge for us this week, a return game against the only undefeated team, North Adelaide.

Our defence was under pressure early with North Adelaide having the first 7 minutes of play in their forward half. Our midfield was comprehensively outplayed. North Adelaide were able to lock the ball in their forward half, had repeat forward 50 entries and several shots on goal. Not surprisingly we held up well defensively and only conceded 1 goal. Despite being jumped early, we were able to grind for the remainder of the quarter. Jess Bates and Ellie Kellock stood up, both were strong and steadying for us in the backline.

We did lift our intensity early in the second quarter, with the ball spending majority of the time moving up and back between the arcs. We conceded an easy goal over the back, but Molly Affolter then kicked our first goal following some good pressure in our forward line. We conceded another goal late in the quarter. Half time break saw us down by just over 2 goals.

After being able to reset at half time, we started the third quarter strong with purpose and intent. We had all the momentum and the ball was firmly locked in our forward half for most of the quarter. Our trademark pressure had finally made an appearance. Eloise Jones, Madi Freeman and Sam Franson provided us with a lift around the ball. We were able to bring the margin back to 4 points within the first 6 minutes of the quarter, on the back of a couple of goals to Eloise Jones. Despite having all the momentum for the majority of the quarter we were just not able to punish them on the score board as we should have and we conceded two late goals. The margin was back out to just over 2 goals at three quarter time.

We again matched them in the fourth quarter. It was a goal apiece, with Lauren Kenny taking a strong contested mark and converting truly.

Despite the loss, we take a lot of positives from the game. Once again our best is good enough to match it with the best teams. We are building, but we must learn to believe and become more consistent throughout games.

Round 7

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Sturt 0.1 0.2 0.4 0.5 5
Glenelg 1.3 4.4 6.6 8.8 56

After a couple of big weeks taking on the top two teams and being somewhat competitive, we managed to secure our second win for the season, which incredibly keeps our finals chances alive.

As we expected, it was a hot contest early, making it difficult for either team to get any ascendancy. After a sustained grind, we managed to kick our only goal for the quarter at the 9 minute mark, a clever forward stoppage goal from Tamsyn Morriss. Pleasingly, we finished the quarter having four scoring shots to one, resulting in an 8 point lead.

We managed to get some control after the quarter time break. The game opened up and we were able to hit the scoreboard, having four scoring shots each quarter for the remainder of the game. Despite the significance of a 51 point win, this was by no means easy, with Sturt being renowned as a tough and physical opponent.

Tessa Kohn had a great impact across four quarters. Her continued development throughout the season has been impressive.

We had an even spread of players to impact the scoreboard, with 8 individual goal scorers. This is most pleasing as we have been working hard to build a strong, deep and versatile list.

Round 8

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Glenelg 1.1 1.1 2.1 3.3 21
South Adelaide 1.1 3.2 5.2 6.4 40

Another tough game this week and another disappointing loss against South Adelaide, for the second time since the season resumption.

Our trademark footy, which we pride ourselves on, fluctuated throughout the entire game, which meant we were we unable to get into a consistent rhythm.

Our best, albeit in patches, was still very good. We still had more than enough opportunities forward, but our inability to use the ball well when going inside forward 50 was very poor for most of the game and in the end, it cost us.

Despite the poor showing offensively, we were pleased with how we stood up defensively for most of the game. That said, we did concede a few soft goals late across three of the quarters, which in the end was the difference in the game as we went down by 19 points.

The effort of the players cannot be faulted, but the same issues of inconsistency are holding us back. We continue to work hard to improve this, but it needs to start to emerge in games when the heat is on.

Ebony Marinoff was tough and skillful inside and outside the contest. Jess Bates was a solid contributor across four quarters. The never-ending run from Deni Varnhagen was important. Lauren Fisher was strong in the one-on-one contests.

Round 9

1st 2nd 3rd Final Pts
Glenelg 2.1 3.2 7.4 8.5 53
Eagles 1.0 1.1 1.1 1.2 8
Deni Varnhagen

It was great to be back on the winners list this week with a 45-point win over the Eagles. Overall the game was pleasing, and it was great to see us get some reward for the effort of the playing group over the last 4 weeks.

The Eagles scored the first goal of the game, but that would be their only major for the game, as once again our defence stood up strong. Time and time again were able to set up attacking transitions from our half back line. The run and carry of both Madi Freeman and Grace Duffy through the middle and the group was instrumental.

Pleasingly we were able to hit the scoreboard more fluently this week, with Sam Franson looking very lively, Eloise Jones continuing to impact and Cailtin Gould looking very dangerous.

But the most pleasing story to come from the game was our latest debutant, Casie Coombe, who despite having to wait till Round 9 for her chance, didn’t waste any time having an impact on the game from the very start.

Despite the strong win, our efforts to secure a top four position has fallen short with other results not going our way.

Norwood will take some meaningful form into the major round of the Statewide Super Women’s League after outplaying Glenelg by 56 points at The Parade.

Piling on four straight goals to nil in the opening term, the Redlegs effectively had the game in control at half-time after establishing a 40-point lead.

Last year’s SANFLW Best-and-Fairest Najwa Allen was rated as Norwood’s best while vice-captain Sophie Armitstead and Jess Macolino also performed strongly.

Veteran Kate Fenton continues to hit the scoreboard, booting three majors as the hosts spoiled the retirement farewell of the Tigers’ inaugural captain Cassie Hartley.

Crows AFLW utility Caitlin Gould scored the Bays’ only major in the final term while she was joined by Tessa Kohn and Lucy Armitage on the best players slip.
