Shaun McKernan is a tall forward/ruckman. Shaun is the younger brother of former North Melbourne (AFL) premiership ruckman Corey McKernan.

He transferred during 2013 season from South Adelaide to Glenelg improve his prospects of regaining his position with the Adelaide AFL side. He played 5 games in total during 2013 for the Bays.

At the end of the 2013 season McKernan, along with other AFL listed players, left Glenelg following the formation of SANFL "reserves" teams in the SANFL for Adelaide and Port Adelaide AFL clubs.

McKernan had been drafted by Adelaide with pick 28 in the 2008 national draft. He showed glimpses of his potential but soft tissue injuries and untimely suspensions meant he failed to cement a regular AFL spot. After six seasons and 34 games with the club, Adelaide delisted him.

He joined Essendon with pick 12 in the 2014 rookie draft. In November 2016, McKernan was delisted by Essendon, however, he was re-drafted by Essendon in the 2017 rookie draft. McKernan was mainly used as a forward target with the occasional role of relieving in the ruck.

In November 2020 McKernan joined St Kilda as a Free Agent following his second delisting by Essendon.
