ROUND 5

WHAT a day of local football at Brighton Road on Sunday afternoon.

North Adelaide play the sexiest brand of football the local competition has seen in 15 years, and the Bays show promise for season 2006 and beyond.

That is the assessment from the game played in front of over 5000 football fans between two clubs at different stages of evolution.

The second quarter alone produced 18 goals (the entire game 40), and all fans should be grateful for the entertainment.

Glenelg has talent, youth and and a brainy coach at the helm for the next three years, so success will be forthcoming.

Will it be in season 2006? Only time will tell.

At this stage the Bays look like they could challenge for a final five placing at the end of the minor round, providing everything goes smoothly.

They have proven that they can beat the old guard in the Eagles and Centrals, but the new guard of Port and North are the measuring stick this year. Glenelg looks fitter than ever, and David Mitchell is testament to this.

New recruit Justin McConnell gets plenty of the ball, and Aaron Rogers, Jeff Smith, Brett Backwell, and Paul Sherwood are playing consistent football to date.

Adam Fisher is a gun midfielder, Daniel Kirk an athletic ruckman, and Jarrad Sundqvist adds grunt to the midfield.

Marcus Burdett is looking good and will get better as the season unfolds.

With this core group of players Glenelg has the ingredients to mix it with any side.

They did so at Brighton Road on Sunday, but in the end were beaten by a better side.

If injuries remain at a minimum, Glenelg could well provide some September action for the Bays faithful, but the test now comes with games on the road over the next three rounds against South (Noarlunga), West (Broadspectrum), and the litmus test Port (Alberton). The success to be achieved for season 2006 will be evident by then, and further so with games against Sturt and Norwood (Glenelg) and the Eagles (Thebarton).
