Career

Austin played two senior games for the Glenelg Tigers in the 2006 SANFL season, and was subsequently selected in the 2006 AFL National Draft in the third round (35th pick overall) by Carlton, who also selected school friend and Glenelg team mate Bryce Gibbs in the same draft. He spent the 2007 season primarily with Carlton's VFL-affiliate, the Northern Bullants. He made his AFL debut in the final round of the 2007 season.

In 2008, Austin returned to the VFL, playing in defence. He started the season at full-back, but was later moved into a centre-half back role, where he began to show good form. He has also, on rare occasions, played as a key forward. Austin became a regular in Carlton's defence during 2009, playing as the third tall defender, although often against taller opponents, as Carlton's defenders were hit by injury in 2009. Austin never got a look in at the Blues and was delisted at the end of season 2011.

He was picked up in the 2012 Rookie Draft by the Western Bulldogs, and played a further 29 games over three seasons before being delisted again.
