Round 21 2010
From Snoutslouts
GLENELG gave its supporters another reason for optimism with a convincing 76-point victory over an outclassed South Adelaide at Brighton Rd yesterday.
In another glaring indication of the gap between the competition elite and the ladder stragglers, the Tigers had far too much firepower for the wooden-spoon destined Panthers.
The game was all but over as a contest at half-time after the home side rammed home 10 goals for the second quarter.
Glenelg's superiority was emphasised in the statistics, with 108 more possessions than the Panthers and, significantly, 50 more marks too many by loose players deep in attack.
The victory was its 14th for the season, equal in wins with top side Central District and second only on percentage with two rounds remaining.
``Our last month has been better in terms of getting closer to playing four quarters, Glenelg coach Mark Mickan said.
``We have been patchy and were still a bit patchy today.
``The overall effort has been closer to four quarters in recent weeks.
The Tigers had a sluggish start to the contest and allowed the Panthers an early ascendancy.
As has been an issue for the Panthers all season, however, skill errors were a major concern and the ball was turned over when attempting to be too cute with possession.
Glenelg turned up the heat in the second term and with a swag of balls out of the centre, it bagged four goals in five minutes by firing the ball long into the likes of strong-marking Todd Grima.
In contrast to the opening 10 minutes of the match when sloppy going into attack, the Tigers found their poise and precision to bombard its attacking 50m.
Luke Panozzo was a key instigator behind many raids, Ty Allen got his hands dirty in the packs as usual, Ben Mules was strong in defence and Byron Murphy was prominent. Did Murphy have an opponent?
What the Tigers do extremely well is rush forward in numbers and create options when they obtain the ball.
Their run was also aided by the fact they were facing an opposition lacking big bodies and that too many Panther tackles failed to stick.
Credit to the Panthers though, they had a fair dinkum crack in the third term when they could have taken easier options.
Blokes such as Xavier Gotch and Nick Liddle maintained the work rate and Jacob Crate did a solid job on dangerous Glenelg forward Ruory Kirkby.
But the class of the home side was evident in the final term when it again switched into top gear.
``The third quarter was really good but it was disappointing to fall away like we did, Panthers coach Ron Fuller said.
``We are talking about a pretty good outfit (Glenelg) too.
``They have been in good form and are gaining a full head of steam for the finals - we understand and respect that. After the third quarter we wanted to finish the game off but we did not get enough of the ball.
