After playing Seconds for Melbourne in 1945 and injuring his ankle, Alan McGowan then moved to Adelaide, where he had been stationed as a member of the Air Force.

Melbourne initially refused him a clearance so he played with Sturt in the Glenelg Districts Association, before signing for Glenelg in 1947. After two games he was dropped and didn't play for them again.

After returning to Melbourne in 1948, McGowan attended trials with the Demons and impressed. He broke into the side late in the year lined up in a winning Preliminary Final team in his fourth game. He was suspended for attempted striking and missed both the 1948 Grand Final and the replay.

After being dumped by the Demons at the end of 1950, McGowan won a clearance to Collingwood in May 1951 and played one game for the Magpies. He transferred to Ballarat in 1952.
