Since 1977 the VFL had run their own "national" night football competition. From 1979 this was under a purpose-formed company: Australian Football Championships (AFC).

The competition had 14 teams in 1986: all sides from VFL, and the top 2 sides from the SANFL. The WAFL, and the winner of the minor State's/Territory carnival were no longer involved.

Matches were played starting in pre-season, and on mid-week nights during the Premiership season. The two SA teams played their 1st Round matches at Football Park, and all the other matches were at VFL Park, Waverley.

The names of the AFC Cup contest changed with the sponsorship arrangements each season - 1986 was named the Fosters Cup, for a brand of beer made by Carlton Brewery.

This was the last of the AFC Night Series, as the expanded VFL in 1987 formed its own night competition and the AFC disbanded.
