Glenelg suffered at 2-point loss to Port Adelaide Magpies in a tight contest at Alberton Oval on Saturday afternoon.

In a round of unpredictable results the Magpies produced their first win over the Tigers in five years, and showed they will be a side to watch in 2011.

Signs looked good for the Bays as Kane Tenace kicked the first goal, but Port rallied and the sides went blow for blow as the wind played havoc with set shots.

The second quarter was all Glenelg; opening up a handy lead with goals to Trembath, Grima, Hitchcock, and Kirkby. The boys looked to have taken hold of the game in the second quarter when they opened up 26-point half time lead.

But the half time buffer didn’t last. Brett Ebert hit his stride and the Magpies dominated in the third, while Glenelg lost momentum and the lead.

With the sides going in level in the final term it was another big task for the Tigers.

The Magpies got off to the perfect start by kicking the first goal in the final term, but Glenelg quickly responding with a long bomb from Power-listed player Cameron Hitchcock, and Jordan McMahon’s first League goal.

John Butcher responded for the Magpies however, and Port was able to hang on to the game as Glenelg lost Sam Rudolph and Daniel Kirk to injury at critical stages in the last quarter.
