Mervyn George Waite was a leading footballer in the SANFL, firstly at West Torrens where he was the leading goalkicker in 1931, 1932 and 1934.

Waite suffered the immense disappointment of missing the 1933 Grand Final, which Torrens won, with injury.

An accomplished cricketer, he toured England in 1938 with Don Bradman's Australians, playing two Tests.

Upon his return to Australia he shifted his football to Glenelg in 1939 after getting the job as oval curator. He gave the Bays - including the combined Glenelg/West wartime outfit - solid service until he retired in 1942.

In total he played 142 league games, kicking 343 goals,
