James Sampson joined Norwood in 1920 and played as a follower in his first league game for Norwood.
A tall player and a fine mark, Sampson was also capable of playing as a forward or defender. Sampson played six league games in 1920, and the following season was part of a Norwood reserves premiership team.
In 1922 he played another six league games for South Adelaide. By this stage he was a police officer stationed in Adelaide.
He captained Solomontown (Port Pirie) to a premiership in 1924, but in 1925 returned to Adelaide and had a stint with the Glenelg Football Club, playing another 13 league games. Sampson was named best follower. He also impressed State selectors and was chosen to represent South Australia against Western Australia in Perth but missed the game due to injury. Simpson played in Glenelg's first ever League win in Round 1 1925.
He had planned to continue playing for Glenelg in 1926, but after a couple of training sessions, returned to Port Pirie.
