GLENELG showed its killer instinct by overcoming a tight first half to dispose of North Adelaide by 45 points at Gliderol Stadium yesterday.
After leading by four points at half time, it took the Tigers just 10 minutes to land the knockout blow in the third.
They had too much class and despite showing early fight, North simply could not match it.
Midfielders Matthew Bode, Kane Tenace, Ben Kane and Ty Allen were terrific, Luke Panozzo outstanding running off half back and Ruory Kirkby, Todd Grima and Sam Rudolph were on the end of everything up forward.
There were also better signs from Chad Cornes in his second game back, who despite conceding three goals to Clint Alleway in the first term, worked his way into the game.
Our ability to win some contested ball was important in the third quarter and we were a lot more direct, Tigers coach Mark Mickan said.
Even though we only kicked 1.4 in the second quarter we had a lot of the play, what we couldn't do was take advantage of that.
We continued with the same effort in the third quarter but got results because we opened the game up in our forwardline.
Still ruing last week's undisciplined effort against Sturt, North Adelaide coach Daniel Healy made it a rule that any player who gave away a 25m penalty went straight to the bench.
It's bad enough to be doing that (giving away 25m penalties) when you're winning but if you're not going well and you're doing that I reckon you start to look like a rabble so we had to make a statement today and they were really good, Healy said.
I don't think anything was undisciplined today . . . a couple of minor indescretions, but they just ran off.
Without injured midfield stars James Allan and Leigh Ryswyk who withdrew late, Healy admitted his team was up against it from the start but there were positive signs from his young side.
I was rapt at half time, our first quarter the way we scored goals was from genuine pressure, hunting them and turning it over in really good areas, he said.
We just weren't able to sustain it. They were too good for us clearly, but we had to keep that frenetic intensity and pressure up and it's not easy.
All I was after and all I'll keep being after is for players to show they want to be part of our club going forward.
Healy praised recruit James Bennett who produced arguably his best game for the club with 23 disposals while Djaran Whyman, Rhys Archard, Matthew Wright and Cain Ackland were solid.
The Tigers were switched on early with goals to Mark Ruwoldt, Byron Murphy and Ben Kane in the first five minutes, but to North's credit it weathered the storm then counter-attacked through Alleway.
The second quarter was an arm-wrestle and it took the contested-marking power of Kirkby to register Glenelg's only goal of the second term to set up a four-point half time lead.North's defence had so far stood up to the test but it eventually cracked in the third term.
Bode produced his own one-two combination to floor the Roosters with consecutive goals and despite Ackland's quick reply, the Tigers could smell blood and went in for the kill.
Allen caught Luke Ivens in a ferocious tackle in the goal square and converted then Grima joined the party with two goals to put them 26 points clear.
North managed consecutive goals in the final term but the sting had gone out of the contest, as Glenelg capped celebrations with a goal to Shannon Snook on debut.
