Career

Gordon Abbott was an excellent follower with a superb build. He could kick with either foot and was a fine team man.

He played with Glenelg in South Australia in 1939 for a single season.

Abbott had started his football career with Geelong Amateurs and then Lefroy in Tasmania before playing 50 games with Geelong from 1936 to 1938. Abbott was a member of the Geelong 1937 premiership team.

He went to Essendon from Newtown (now Glenorchy) in Tasmania where he was captain-coach in 1940. He played in the ruck in Essendon's 1942 premiership side. He was one of the best players in that position in the 1946 premiership win as well. This was his best year with Essendon.

Abbott won Essendon's best first year player award in 1941 and the most consistent player award in 1946.

Abbott was also a leading rower and represented Tasmania's King's Cup crew.

He joined Wilby after leaving Essendon at the end of 1947.
