Dave Smith stepped in as caretaker coach after Round 3 of the 1924 season, and remained as coach for the rest of the season.
Smith was the A Grade treasurer and had been an interstate selector, coach of the B Grade, and had played a few B Grade games in 1923.
Smith's appointment arose when Fred "Stump" Pincombe resigned of his own accord after the side lost the first three games of the 1924 season. Sadly Smith's coaching proved no more fruitful than Pincombe, with the Bays finishing the 1924 season winless (as they had done since commencing in 1921) despite getting with a point of Norwood in one match.
