GLENELG once again showed again on Saturday that it could compete with Central District for long periods but it also received another sobering reality check when the game was on the line.
After leaving the three-quarter time huddle at Elizabeth a point up and with a morale boosting win in sight, the Bays were smashed by a Dogs side which which looked leagues apart.
In the end the Bays 17.7 (109) to 11.6 (72) - after being out scored seven goals to one in the last term - and, instead of leavins the ground with a morale boost, trudged away surely doubting their ability to match the Dogs come finals time.
``We were still in it at three quarter-time," Mickan said.
``To finish the way we did was extremely disappointing - it tells us we've got a lot of work to do based around our composure and ability to play a game right out.
Central led by 17 points at the end of an entertaining opening term but fell 13 points in arrears at halftime after the Bays stunned the home side with some hard contested football, to win the quarter five goals to nothing and the the quarter possession count 119 to 59. lated Coverage
The Bulldogs scored the first four majors of the third period to open up an 11-point advantage, which the Tigers countered with back-to-back goals to Daniel Scott-Collings and Josh Willoughby to enter the final change up by a point before the final quarter whitewash.
``We got right on top (in the second quarter)," Mickan said.
``Our backline was excellent, our ball movement was efficient and our forwards finished off well.
``We prevented a lot of run out of their backline but we weren't able to replicate that in the last quarter.
``I think a lot of credit has to go to the opposition - their clearance work was really clean."
There were positoves for Glenelg. Ty Allen was superb and gathered 23 touches despite spending time on the bench.
Luke Panozzo (28 touches, 10 marks) was typically reliable, while Byron Murphy Ben Mules were solid.
``We know that our best football is good enough but it needs to be applied for longer," Mickan said.
``We had one very satisfying quarter, a couple of mediocre ones and one disgraceful one."
