Mark "Rubbers" Mickan has the unusual history of being on the inaugural player list for two VFL/AFL clubs - Brisbane Bears and Adelaide Crows. He began and finished his senior career with SANFL club West Adelaide. All-Australian Team selection in 1988 marked the pinnacle of his playing career.

He coached the Glenelg Football Club for 5 and a half seasons, making him the third longest-serving coach in the Club's history.

During his time as coach he returned Glenelg to being a regular participant in Finals football; the team finished Minor Premiers twice; and played off in the 2008 Grand Final. While the team enjoyed success during the Home and Away season, its Finals record during this time lacked success and in both 2009 and 2010 the team lost both Finals matches.

His position as Coach was terminated after Round 12 in 2011 with the team at 4 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses. The Glenelg Board stating that they had released him from the remainder of his contract (to the end of 2011 season) as they felt he could not take the current playing group any further. He was replaced by Reserves coach, [[Kris Massie]] who was appointed in a care-taker role for the remainder of the season.
