Correct name / name in newspapers

Pride of the Bay refers to this player as Wilfred Bail. That is in the list of games played and in the caption to a photo of the team that won Glenelg's first match in 1925.

On Trove I could find no mention of a "W" Bail in any Glenelg games or pre-season gossip. In early Trove newspaper references there is a Bails, Baile, and then almost universally, over several years, a "C. Bail". PotB makes no reference to a C. Bail at all, nor are there any names close to that listed in the games played part of PotB.

Looking at WWII records there is a person called Wilfred Clare Bail, born at Clare in 1902, who had two knee injuries recorded in his earlier CMF (old version of Army Reserves) records. The knee injuries would be consistent with some press reports of serious knee injuries our Bail suffered during his footy. The height and weight given in those medical records also would fit our Bail.

There are no contemporary references to W. Bail in any match reports that I could find. There were references to either "Bail" or "C. Bail".

Hence I have decided that C.Bail in the news reports of the day must refer to our Wilfred Bail. I cannot imagine him being called Clare, but I could imagine he being called Clarrie in that era, but that is speculation on my part.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/215200266 - at the end of this article it says "Claire Bail has recovered from his injury which kept him out of last week's game". Allowing for some latitude with spelling in a newspaper compared to a Military record, it seems that C. Bail is the way we should be going. Ranga 11:17, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
