Michael Virgin came to Glenelg in 2019, having rediscovered his passion for football. By the end of the season he was an important part of the Bays first League premiership since 1986.

Career

Michael Virgin had a strong family history with the North Adelaide club. Michael's grandfather, Norman Virgin, played 13 games with North Adelaide 1939-1941, and his father Lee was North Adelaide President. Michael himself spent four seasons with North, playing 35 League games. In 2016 he was a key member of the Reserves premiership side with over 30 disposals in the Grand Final.

So when he was told in 2018 he would not even be selected for the reserves at North Adelaide he thought he had left SANFL behind him. After spending the first half of 2018 with family in Melbourne, he returned to Adelaide to play at PHOS Camden with his brother Sam and a few mates.

Then in November, Tigers premiership player and family friend Tony Symonds asked if he was keen to have another crack at league football. A phone call from Tigers football manager Paul Sandercock was followed by a call from coach Mark Stone and he claims he could not say yes quick enough.

After a false start in Round 1 of 2019, where he was tried in attack, he spent time in the Reserves. Then in Round 10 he was played in the League side in his preferred defensive role and from that point he gradually became a key player in the Bays launch to the premiership.
