John played in the 1921 Port Adelaide Premiership before joining Glenelg in 1924

A speedy determined Wingman

Extract from an unknown newspaper in 1927 described him playing with determination and dash. "J.Lloyd the speedy Glenelg wingman has been an outstanding performer this season. His form has been a revelation to supporters of the seaside club. Lloyd has a disposition eminently suited to the game. He will not admit defeat, and strong opposition only spur him on to greater effort. He is a sportsman in the true sense of the word, and plays the game cleanly and fairly in all circumstances. Once his hands are on the ball it will be sent forward to the best advantage"
